Avid VideoRAID ST and SR
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is SAS?
A: Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is a data transfer technology designed to move data to and from computer storage devices such as hard drives and tape drives. It is a point-to-point serial protocol that replaces the parallel SCSI bus technology that first appeared in the mid 1980's in corporate data centers, and uses the standard SCSI command set. Currently rated at 3Gb/sec, SAS speed is expected to double in 2009 to 6Gb/sec, with downward compatibility to current products.
Q: Will the VideoRAID ST and SR work with my current (non-v3.0) Avid editing systems?
A: Absolutely, current editing platforms and versions fully support use of the VideoRAID ST and SR arrays. The supported list of pre-3.0 applications is as follows:
- Avid Xpress Pro 5.7.x, 5.8.x
- Media Composer 2.7.x, 2.8.x
- Media Composer Adrenaline 2.7.x, 2.8.x
- NewsCutter XP 6.7.x, 6.8.x
- NewsCutter Adrenaline 6.7.x, 6.8.x
- Symphony Nitris 1.7x
Q: What is "HALT" testing?
A: Highly-Accelerated Life Testing (HALT) exposes the product to a step-by-step cycling in environmental variables such as temperature, shock and vibration. HALT involves vibration testing in all three axes using a random mode of frequencies. Finally, HALT testing can include the simultaneous cycling of multiple environmental variables, for example, temperature cycling plus vibration testing. This multi-variable testing approach provides a closer approximation of real-world operating environments. Unlike conventional testing, the goal of HALT testing is to break the product. When the product fails, the weakest link is identified, so engineers know exactly what needs to be done to improve product quality.
